ROAM - Rivers Oceans & Mountains

Setting afloat from a glacier on the Klinaklini River

Adventure by Design: Custom Adventures

At ROAM we truly love what we do. We develop our trips through personal experience, diligent research, careful planning and most importantly, with our travelers in mind.  Like any good host, we need to ensure to find appropriate activity levels for each of you.  For the most part, almost anyone can participate on any of our expeditions.  It is not about experience or physical abilities.  It’s really about having a positive attitude and being willing to accept limitations.

Having said this, we want to understand your expectations and find the right trip for you.  Sure, we’ll encourage you to challenge your limits but we always remember that this is your vacation and your time is valuable.

Rafting Expeditions vs. Multi-sports

Our river expeditions utilize rafts as a “vehicle of access” to some of the world’s most incredible places.  On these trips there is as much land-based exploration - hiking or fishing - as there is time on the water.  The regions we travel to are extremely remote and in some cases, we are the only people in the world who go there.  Needless to say there are no Relais & Chateau hotels in these locales, nor would we want there to be, so we try to make camping as comfortable as possible.

WHY SETTLE FOR 5 STARS WHEN YOU CAN HAVE 10,000?

Sleeping under the stars is a wonderful experience. While we won’t claim any restorative benefits of sleeping in a tent, it’s really not bad.  We provide expedition quality tents, thick self-inflating mattresses, tables, chairs, campfires, portable toilets and even hot showers.

Our High Arctic and Alaska trips may require greater coping skills than our “sun and fun” departures.  The rewards in the Arctic are different.  Decadence takes on a different form such as sipping fine wines, riverside, while witnessing caribou migrations or seeing glaciers calving into the river at breakfast.  Weather in the north can be spectacular during summer but you have a greater range of climatic conditions possible the further north we go or the closer to Alaska we get.

Trips like the Klinaklini or Chilko have the added bonus of world-class whitewater in addition to scenic splendor, spawning salmon, grizzly bears and wolves.  Trips here, more often than not, allow us to bask in glorious sunshine while traveling through these impressive corridors.

Multi-sports

This is the fastest growing segment of our company and for good reason.  A multi-sport adventure offers a variety of activities and thus a broad appeal.  ROAM multi-sports utilize quaint inns, grandiose lodges or remote luxury resorts depending on where you are traveling.  The activities almost always include rafting and ocean kayaking but may also focus on hiking, heli-hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing and even rock climbing.  The beauty of this format is that all activities are optional and can vary in degree of difficulty.  Truly there is always something for everyone and at the end of the day you reward yourself with a hot shower, comfortable rooms and outstanding meals.

"The intensity of a whitewater experience seems to double a person's distance from jobs, freeways, home cities and workaday responsibility. It sharpens all senses, hones your physicality, deepens your ability to fully inhabit a moment and take delight in the natural world. More than simple immersion, whitewater offers a literal baptism into an old, yet eternally fresh way of life."
