Day 4
Today, early in the morning, we drive to Urubamba – the Sacred Valley of the Incas – through the most spectacular scenery surrounded by corn, potato and cereal fields, having our first contact with the glaciers of the Andes mountain range. Here we visit the villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo with their famous archeological monuments and bustling local markets. After lunch, it is another 30 minute walk before we reach the end of the trail and the point where we are picked-up by our private mini-van.  They’ll shuttle us for 30 minutes to the entrance to the Llactapata Inca Trail. This recently restored Inca Trail, is unknown to tourists. At this point, as the mules cannot continue so porters will carry our packs for the 30 minute hike to the Lucma Lodge, located in Lucmabamba (6,900ft.),  nestled among coffee, avocado and banana plantations. Again, we walk through an impressive cloud forest that leads us to an important group of Inca ruins at the top of the pass: the Llactapata observatory. It is in this place that we have our first distant – and very exclusive – view of the historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu … but we are not there yet! We trek downhill to the Machu Picchu hydroelectric power plant, where at the train station we take a 40-minute train ride to Aguas Calientes, or the town of Machu Picchu (6200 ft.), located right at the base of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.  Overnight in Aguas Calientes at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Machu Picchu

Day 11
Very early in the morning our guide takes us by bus to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (7,900ft.) for a 2-hour tour of the site, so we can spend some time after the tour exploring the Inca city on our own. Around mid-day, we go back to the town of Aguas Calientes for a buffet lunch in town. In the afternoon we take a 2-hour train ride to the city of Ollantaytambo, where a bus will be waiting to take us back to Cusco (1 ½ hours) and the Libertador Hotel (5*).  Overnight in Cusco.

Day 12
Today we take an impressive train ride to Puno (10 hrs) on one of the best train trips in South America.  Travelling comfortably through the altiplano (or high Andean-mountain setting) we will see unique flora and fauna all the way to Lake Titicaca (12,500ft). This day of traveling by train is a classic way to see rural Peru . Overnight in Puno at Hotel Libertador.

Lake Titicaca

Day 13
After an early breakfast, we will drive for 2 hours to the community of Yachon to find our double-kayaks waiting for us to take us to Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca.  We will spend about 3 hours paddling before meeting our local hosts who will invite us to learn about their traditions and everyday life. This is a great opportunity to blend with the people of this Quechua community. At the conclusion of our day, we’ll journey by motor boat back to Yachon and the hotel.  Overnight in Puno at Hotel Libertador.

Day 14 -July 3, 2008
