Notes from the River - A letter from Brian McCutcheon
After working for several years as a guide in Australia and New Zealand, I was yearning to get back to my home roots. Two months after my return to an office job in Toronto, I knew I had to get west again. The Rockies are a land of legends, steeped with natural and human history. Banff National Park was formed more than 100 years ago and every time I look at these majestic mountains I wonder why you would ever go anywhere else?
Our journey eclipses the best the Canadian Rockies has to offer yet takes in some of the less traveled and more intimate corridors outside of Banff and Kootenay national parks. We’ll explore quintessential Banff and Lake Louise but also challenge some incredible waterways by raft and inflatable kayak. To immerse you further, we’ll spend some time at a luxurious resort tucked under Mount Nelson on the BC side of the Rockies. Here you’ll enjoy lift-serviced mountain biking, horseback riding or even a round of golf—knowing the next day we’ll disappear into the backcountry and soak in primitive hot springs.
No matter how you slice it, entering this landscape of ice, freckled with towering serrated ridges and dramatic glacial lakes is always a pleasure and the scale of the mountains mesmerizing. We are excited to offer the best whitewater along with some of the region’s most decadent and luxurious lodges complete with all the best trimmings.
Brian McCutcheon founded Rivers & Oceans in 1986 and has been operating rafting and kayaking trips in British Columbia since the late eighties. In 2000, we changed to Rivers Oceans And Mountains as the addition of “mountains” better reflects the topography of the regions we visit. The new company, ROAM, offers many different inn-to-inn style adventures as well as remote camping expeditions. Brian spent many years living in the Rockies pioneering new waterways and revolutionizing travel in this region. When not in the field, Brian is the Managing Director of ROAM from our field offices in Nelson, British Columbia.
